Why Does My Aircon Smell Musty or Sour?

A musty or sour smell is almost always mould and bacteria on the coil and drain — Singapore’s humidity makes it common, and a deep clean fixes it. A burning smell is different: switch off and call.

The short answer

A musty, sour, or damp smell from your aircon is almost always mould and bacteria growing on the cooling coil and in the drain — extremely common in Singapore’s humidity. A chemical wash (or overhaul, if badly neglected) clears it. IMPORTANT: a burning or chemical smell is electrical, not dirt — switch the unit off at the breaker and call a technician immediately.

Common causes — and the fix for each

Mould and bacteria on the cooling coil (musty/sour)

The most common cause. A damp, dirty coil grows mould that you smell every time it runs — the classic musty, sour, “dirty socks” odour blown into your room.

Clogged drain / stagnant water (damp, sewage-like)

Standing water in a blocked drain tray turns foul and breeds bacteria. Clearing and cleaning the drainage path removes the source of the smell.

Dirty air filter

Trapped dust and damp in a clogged filter give off a stale smell. It’s the cheapest cause to address and the first thing to check.

General servicing

“Dirty sock syndrome” (sour, damp-cloth smell)

Mould forms on a coil that never dries between cycles, giving off a sour, damp-cloth smell each time the unit starts. A deep clean clears it.

Burning or electrical smell (DANGER)

Overheating wiring or a motor — this is not a cleaning issue and it’s urgent. Switch off at the breaker and do not use the unit until it has been checked.

Dead pest inside the unit (rotting smell)

A lizard or insect trapped in the casing can rot and produce a smell that cleaning surfaces won’t fix. The unit needs to be opened to remove it.

Absorbed smoke or cooking odours

Cigarette or kitchen smoke clings to a dirty coil and re-releases into the room. Cleaning the coil removes the trapped odour at the source.

What that smell actually looks like

This is a real unit we opened in an office in Bukit Panjang. The customer’s only complaint was a sour, musty smell every time the aircon came on — it had gone two to three years without a service. Everything the office breathed was passing through this.

Thick black mould and grime clogging the air intake of an aircon that had not been serviced for two to three years — Mould built up across the air intake of an office ceiling cassette — the cause of the musty smell. A chemical wash cleared it and the smell went with it.

This is why wiping the filter or spraying a deodoriser never works for long: the smell is coming from growth on surfaces you cannot reach without opening the unit up.

What you can check yourself first

These are free and safe to try before booking a visit.

1If you smell burning or anything electrical, switch the unit off at the breaker and do NOT use it — book a technician.
2Remove and rinse the washable filter; a dirty filter is the cheapest, easiest smell to remove.
3Run the aircon in Fan mode for 30 minutes to dry the coil after cooling — damp coils breed mould.
4Check the drain tray/outlet for standing water or slime and clear visible debris.
5Note when the smell appears (on start-up, constantly, only when cooling) to help diagnosis.

When to call a technician

A burning or electrical smell is urgent — switch off at the breaker and book an aircon repair before running the unit again. For a musty or sour smell, fan-mode drying and a filter wash only mask the problem: the mould is on the coil and inside the drain, and an aircon chemical wash is what actually removes it at the source.
